Lockdowns might seem like a thing of the past, but many of us are still working from home. Whether it be through our own choice or due to a decision made by our employer, there’s no doubt that it can be a good way to work. There’s no commute, no formal attire, and for those that don’t need a social environment to thrive it can be more peaceful and less stressful overall. The only issue with working from home is that many of us still aren’t fully equipped to do so. Too many people are still working from their kitchen tables, their beds or sofas which isn’t ideal. Here are some of the ways you can put this right.
Find a space to work
If you’re planning on working from home for the foreseeable future then it’s worth setting up a proper office space if you can. If you have a bedroom that’s not being used then that’s ideal. Otherwise, you could look into renovating a basement or loft, having a garden room set up or converting a garage or outbuilding. This can be expensive since you’ll need to look into everything from insulation to wall and ceiling repair to decor. But if you’re going to be using this space for the next decade or more, it’s a worthy investment and will add value to your house too. If you don’t have the space or means to transform a room into an office, at the very least find a quiet corner where you can set up a desk and some shelving. Perhaps this could be under the stairs in your hallway, in your living room or bedroom.
Find the right desk and chair
Speaking of the desk, it pays to get this right. You need to be comfortable and have everything you need at arms reach, plus a good desk and chair will promote better back and neck health as you’re less likely to slouch. Go to a shop and physically sit in a few different chairs at desks and think about what works for you. You will need to consider the space you have for your desk and the type of work you do. Some professions will require more desk space than others.
Invest in good storage
When you work from home, whether it be for yourself or for a company there are always going to be lots of items you will need. It could be anything from paperwork, stationery, stock and office equipment, to raw materials, and tools to manufacture your own products depending on what you do. A filing cabinet, shelving, storage pots, storage bins and other solutions will help you to keep things in order. This can help you to stay productive and make your working from home experience more successful.
A good home working space can be the difference between success and failure in your work from home endeavours. The right setup can help you to stay organised, boost your mood and your productivity.
