When you get to the stage in your business where you will be hiring staff, you want to ensure that you get things right the first time. After all, recruitment and hiring staff is a costly exercise for any business with advertising and training costs to take into consideration.
However, you might be wondering what it is you should be considering when attempting to hire somebody. With that in mind, here are some other factors aside from their general experience that you might want to think about.
How Many Jobs That They Have Had And For How Long?
When you get a resume, you tend to not only have a list of jobs, but also the time between each one and how long they generally stayed in a position for. Sure on appear they may have all of the relevant experience but you need to look beyond that to decide whether they are the right candidate for you.
This means things such as frequency and how many jobs they have had. Is there a reason they didn’t stay too long with a particular company? Did they leave that other job for any other reasons? They may, of course, have completely genuine explanations such as moving location for a partner, or finding that the job they accepted wasn’t what it initially set out to be. Then you can decide how you feel about it.
Past Situations With Crime And Drugs
You can’t judge people from past mistakes, but you can be assured that you are aware of them. A candidate should be upfront with anything that is criminal or drug related. While you can discriminate for their past mistakes, you can then consider putting things in place to ensure that as a company you are protected as well as the welfare of your new employee.
Things like mobile drug testing, for example, could work well to keep an open honest line of communication between you as the employer and them as the employee. You don’t want to miss out on potential candidates just because they may have made a mistake in the past.
The Current Lifestyle That They Lead
Sometimes it is hard to make initial judgements, or to avoid making snap judgements in terms of the lifestyle that they lead. However, it is important to take all factors into account when it comes to recruiting new members of staff. From how they may spend their spare time to whether they have a family or are in a relationship. While these are not deciding factors, they can help you get a better understanding of who you are recruiting.
Their General Appearance And Demeanor
Finally, again we can all make snap judgements and that is more so on people’s appearance. While you want to take into account how someone has presented themselves for an interview, you also won’t want to discriminate in this way.
Always give people the benefit of the doubt. If it looks like effort has been made then give credit where it is due. Again you don’t want to miss out on credible candidates just because you made an assumption based on appearance.
Let’s hope this helps you when it comes to hiring the right person for the job.
