Don’t Work for Tech, Make It Work for You

Posted on November 15, 2017 by ben

There are almost no businesses left in the world that don’t use some form of modern day technology such as a computer. As a result, it’s crucial that you need to learn how to use technology in order to make the most of it for your business. It sounds like such a basic and simple concept, but there’s a reason why this needs to be explained.

Far too many companies fall flat on their face because they simply don’t know how to use technology. They let it run wild in their business, they pay ludicrous amounts of money for licenses and for subscription services to keep it running, yet the return on investment is so little that they realize it’s not worth their time.

To help demystify what technology can and can’t do for you, we’re going to go through some basics that every business owner, whether they’re a fresh entrepreneur or an experienced veteran, should know.

Technology Is Only As Good As Its Users

Let’s face it, without giving technology a use it’s basically useless. It’s rarely ever autonomous and you need to give it some input in order for it to be effective in its use. It sounds like such a simple concept, but it’s misunderstood by a lot of business owners.

Let’s put it this way; businesses a decade ago could still stand up to modern businesses without ever touching a computer. How? Because they made the most of what they had at the time. They used simple technology such as computers and recorded every single bit of information by hand on sheets of paper.

Technology should be seen as an upgrade to those traditional services. Spreadsheets are essentially infinitely large sheets of paper that can have values on its surface changed, and email is like a speedier version of snail mail. In other words, if you don’t understand how to use the technology in your business it’s a pointless investment that will suck your budget dry.

Technology Should Be Left To Specialists

There’s a massive market for IT Support for businesses because entrepreneurs know that when it comes to technology, there are better people out there to give the job to. Don’t let the cost of hiring support put you off because their knowledge and expertise will give you the best results and service possible.

Leave IT to specialists and focus on your own role in the company. You wouldn’t take over a design role if you had no clue how to draw or design something and you’d likely not take over accounting if you weren’t great with numbers.

So to summarize; leave technology to the experts and don’t invest in technologies that you don’t understand how to use. Learn to use computers and the software you purchase before delving into more advanced tools like cloud computing. This will ultimately save you a lot of money and make your business more efficient despite not using a computer or advanced technology.

About Us

My good friend Ben started this site many years ago.  Ben said this about himself, “am a follower of Christ, a rabid computer geek, small business owner, and breaker of things. He is married way above his station in life and has three wonderful children who have made driving him insane their mission in life.”

Well back in 2019, Ben suddenly passed away from cancer and he asked me to continue the site. I like Ben, am a follower, a computer geek, a small business owner, and the father of 5 great children.

I miss Ben everyday but run this site in his honor. Thanks for visiting and enjoy!
