Ensuring Your Business Toes the Line When It Comes to the Law

Posted on November 30, 2017 by ben

When it comes to setting up a business, you never know where you might be in five year’s time. The majority of businesses fall at the first hurdle and won’t make it past their first year of operation. Very few make it to five years. But every now and then a business will experience extreme success and skyrocket to greatness. This is, of course, the category you want to fall into. However, with greatness comes great responsibility. You need to know all of the legalities that your business has to abide by. Unfortunately, ignorance isn’t a good enough reason when it comes to court if you find yourself at the receiving end of a court case from break the law in one way or another. So, here are a few things to bear in mind when it comes to operating a company and toeing the line of business law.

Have a Good Attorney at Hand

First things first, you should have your emergency contacts secured. If you ever find yourself at the end of a court case, or arrested due to some sort of problem connected to your business and its operations, you want to have a top end criminal defence attorney there to help you out. Remember that you don’t have to say anything or answer any questions until you have consulted with your attorney. They will be able to assess your case and give you the best advice in regards to your following actions.

Business Organizations

As soon as you start operating a business, you become liable to operate by the standards of business organisations. They are the laws that regulate the creation, maintenance, and demise of a business, so there isn’t a moment in your business career that you won’t have to bear them in mind. They detail your roles and duties as a director, as well as dictating laws to do with partnerships. So start reading up to ensure you’re up to scratch with everything that you’re doing.

Taxes

Now that you have your backup secured, let’s start focusing on ensuring that you don’t end up in a sticky situation to start with. Let’s begin with tax law. Tax law involves the rules, regulations, and requirements regarding payments that go towards the taxes that the government use to fund public spending. It’s easy to mess up with tax payments and violations of payments on income tax can land you in serious trouble. Get in touch with an accountant who will be able to help you with all of this. They may also be able to advise you on benefits such as “pass through taxes”.

Intellectual Property Law

When you’ve worked hard towards creating something, you want to protect it. This is understandable. You don’t want someone else to simply use your ideas and make a living out of money that is rightfully yours. This is where intellectual property law comes to your rescue. It ensures that people can’t use your logo, colour schemes, products, or anything else you’ve worked hard on without your permission. At the same time, you need to ensure that you pay others the same respect or you could find yourself facing hefty fines or even jail time for theft of intellectual property.

Business law is expansive and complex. So if you’re ever in doubt, simply contact a professional or an authority. They’ll be able to help.

About Us

My good friend Ben started this site many years ago.  Ben said this about himself, “am a follower of Christ, a rabid computer geek, small business owner, and breaker of things. He is married way above his station in life and has three wonderful children who have made driving him insane their mission in life.”

Well back in 2019, Ben suddenly passed away from cancer and he asked me to continue the site. I like Ben, am a follower, a computer geek, a small business owner, and the father of 5 great children.

I miss Ben everyday but run this site in his honor. Thanks for visiting and enjoy!
