Key Tips that will Help you to Protect your Business from a Data Breach

Posted on March 15, 2019March 15, 2019 by ben

Every single business out there is a target for cybercriminals. In fact, smaller businesses are more at risk when compared to corporate companies because they usually don’t have a huge security system in place. If you want to protect yourself and your business against a data breach, then you can find some useful tips below.

Bring In A Specialist

It’s so important that you educate your firm about data breaches. You can do this by bringing in a specialist, as they can talk with your team about the best practices and they can also emphasise the importance of being consistent. Even the biggest companies out there have been hacked in the past, and by being aware you can be sure to give your business a much higher level of protection.

Accounts

It is a good idea for you to have separate email accounts. You need to have one for your personal use and one for business use. This way, if someone hacks one of your accounts, they won’t be able to access the other. If possible, you also need to encrypt your data. It doesn’t take long to do this, and it is very simple as well.  A computer support professional may be able to help you with that, so don’t be afraid to chat with them about the options they have available.

Awareness

A lot of very good hacks use social engineering and not brute force. Hackers are remarkably resourceful, and they are also creative as well. For this reason, you need to make sure that you don’t open any emails that seem suspicious. Clicking on untrusted links should also be avoided, as this can open up your entire system. A lot of businesses have two-step identification systems in place, as this can stop any possible hackers from gaining access to your company data.

A Sense Of Urgency

Small businesses don’t often have a process in place that helps them to secure data. This means that employees do not have the resources they need to protect themselves should there ever be a breach. Believe it or not, it is more than possible for you to automate certain processes, such as email encryption.

That being said, your team do need to be trained and they also need to understand the importance and urgency that stems from security. This could include saving files in secure locations, not setting short passwords and even doing computer updates when they are prompted to rather than delaying them.

Data Permissions

A lot of data breaches happen due to employee errors. Your business should always make sure that employees only have access to files that concern them. You also have to make sure that any sensitive files are locked down for your use only. By doing this, you can help to stop files from being misplaced and you can also give yourself a much higher level of protection as well. This can work wonders for your peace of mind, and it also helps to safeguard the people who you work with.

About Us

My good friend Ben started this site many years ago.  Ben said this about himself, “am a follower of Christ, a rabid computer geek, small business owner, and breaker of things. He is married way above his station in life and has three wonderful children who have made driving him insane their mission in life.”

Well back in 2019, Ben suddenly passed away from cancer and he asked me to continue the site. I like Ben, am a follower, a computer geek, a small business owner, and the father of 5 great children.

I miss Ben everyday but run this site in his honor. Thanks for visiting and enjoy!
