How Much Are You Investing In Your Employees?

Posted on July 10, 2017January 4, 2019 by ben

As a business owner, there is one thing that you will have to realize incredibly quickly: you can’t do it all on your own. Sure, if your business is exceptionally small then might be able to handle everything yourself, but the moment it becomes large enough to start turning a significant profit, then you’re pretty much guaranteed to require the help of other people. Because of this, your employees are often the most important part of your business.

And yet, in spite of this, many business owners are incredibly reluctant to bother investing in their employees at all. They assume that their business will keep running on the backs of these people without ever thinking about how they can support and make the most of this incredibly valuable asset. In order to stop you from falling into this trap, here are some important ways to invest in your employees for the good of your business.

Financial Investment

Every single employee that you hire represents some kind of financial investment; there’s no doubt about that. However, a lot of the time business owners will work hard to put in as little financial investment in their employees as possible. This will happen through things like only keeping them at minimum wage, never paying extra for overtime, and not offering bonuses.

Whatever you do, do not do this! This is the fastest possible way to leave your employees feeling dissatisfied and resentful. They are putting in their labor for the good of your business, and you should be willing to pay them fairly for it. Rather than cutting back on your employee’s pay in order to maximize profits, you should be paying them fairly and encouraging them to put in the best possible work through bonuses and overtime pay. Sure, you’ll end up paying out more initially, but the benefits will always outweigh the drawbacks.

Training Investment

Any business that wants to succeed needs to be constantly pushing forward, and if your business is moving forward, then your employees should be as well. In order to do this, you need to be offering them training. Again, many employers are reluctant to do this because of the time and money involved in providing training. However, training your employees is always going to make your business better.

Whether it’s training with a new piece of software, scientific molding classes for those working in manufacturing, training in the use of new social media sites for your marketing department, or anything else, training is essential. The time and money that you spend on the training will always come back around and benefit the business in significant ways.

Personal Investment

Of course, just because you’re paying your employees fairly and helping them develop new skills, that doesn’t mean that they’re always going to be satisfied working for you. In order to make sure of that you need to be able to connect with them on a personal level.

Take the time to get to know your employees, be willing to talk to them and listen to any issues or suggestions that they have. You might think that your time can be spent better elsewhere, but taking the time to connect personally with your employees is always time well spent.

About Us

My good friend Ben started this site many years ago.  Ben said this about himself, “am a follower of Christ, a rabid computer geek, small business owner, and breaker of things. He is married way above his station in life and has three wonderful children who have made driving him insane their mission in life.”

Well back in 2019, Ben suddenly passed away from cancer and he asked me to continue the site. I like Ben, am a follower, a computer geek, a small business owner, and the father of 5 great children.

I miss Ben everyday but run this site in his honor. Thanks for visiting and enjoy!
