Transform Your Home to Get Exactly What You Want

Posted on May 11, 2018 by ben

Finding the perfect house in the perfect location is a near-impossible task. The majority of us, therefore, settle for an average house in the perfect location, thinking that one day, we might be able to do something about that dark corner or weird layout.

The thing is that if you are willing to let the house get a bit messy for a few weeks, there is a lot you can do to transform an average house into a modern dream. Remortgage with a company like https://altrua.ca/ to raise some funds and then create the house of your dreams.

Create an Open Plan Ground Floor

Modern living is no longer about having one room for this, another for that and a further room that no-one really uses. We are now, more than ever, interested in creating an open plan space that can work for everyone. By removing interior walls, you will immediately have more light, more space and a much more natural layout to play with.

Start by taking everything out of the ground floor and looking at the space you have. Drawing a floor plan will also help you to visualise what you could have. Before you do anything, do check which walls are supporting and don’t knock those through! A good compromise could be to put in an archway to allow light through or to add a reinforcing beam.

Build an Extension

An extension is another great move and could add significant value to your home. If you have a garage this could be just the ticket, with a bit of extra insulation and some homely touches, your extension could be easy to complete. Otherwise, you should think carefully about how you want the extension to work and what it is for.

A double height extension is a popular architectural trend at the moment with large windows and ceiling lights. This gives you a much airier space than the rest of the house and can work beautifully for creating a kitchen diner entertaining space. Though we tend to think of space in terms of the floor area, this type of extension will show you that up is just as important as across.

Bring in the Light

One of the main things that people complain about with their home is darkness. The windows are small and shabby and you end up spending a fortune on lighting. A more sensible solution is to add bigger windows.

Use French doors on the ground floor to lead out onto a terrace area in order to give the illusion of significantly more space and add roof lights to your upper floor to flood the rooms with light without compromising your privacy.

Light is absolutely one of the most important features in any house and an architect will be able to help you realize your vision. Glass technology has moved on significantly in the last few years and it would be a shame to continue living in the dark when you know what you could have!

About Us

My good friend Ben started this site many years ago.  Ben said this about himself, “am a follower of Christ, a rabid computer geek, small business owner, and breaker of things. He is married way above his station in life and has three wonderful children who have made driving him insane their mission in life.”

Well back in 2019, Ben suddenly passed away from cancer and he asked me to continue the site. I like Ben, am a follower, a computer geek, a small business owner, and the father of 5 great children.

I miss Ben everyday but run this site in his honor. Thanks for visiting and enjoy!
